8 Effects of Sleep Loss

Sleep is one form in which our body can regain strength. However, there are times in which we can't get enough sleep due to certain reasons. Sleep loss has more effects than our body rather than just making us sleepy. Here are the 8 effects of sleep loss that our body may encounter.

Sleep Loss decreases your Thinking Ability

Sleep is needed in order for us to think and learn properly. Our brain functions including memory, decision-making, reasoning, and problem-solving will be worsened, along with reaction time and alertness. This makes it hard for us to function normally.

Sleep Loss can lead to Serious Health Problems

Sleep loss lowers our immune system. If we have low immunity system, virus that causes problems in the body can easily enter. Sleep loss also makes our body weak and prone to different health problems like heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes and much more.

Sleep Loss can make you Gain Weight

Sleep affects the levels of two hormones, leptin and ghrelin, which control feelings of hunger and fullness. Sleep loss appears to be related in stimulating one's appetite.  If we are deprived of sleep, we might have the feeling of wanting to eat more.

Sleep Loss makes you Unhappy and Irritable

Sleep loss can make people depressed and uneasy. Not being able to have the rest we wanted makes us feeling exhausted and our body will normally ask for that rest. We would be occupied of wanting to have rest and the more we do things while being sleepy, the more we tend to be irritated.

Sleep Loss lowers Pain Threshold

Recent studies shows that if a person is kept awake, it's pain threshold will be lowered. The amount of pain a person can endure lowers as he keeps losing sleep. This may be related to a person lacking sleep having a weaker body than that of a well rested person.

Sleep Loss causes Depleted Sex Drive and Function

Sleep increases testosterone levels and it decreases while being awake. Sleeping for five of fewer hours can reduce sex hormone levels by 10 to 15 percent. Sleep deprivation or being disturbed in your sleep can cause a lower libido and interest in sex.

Sleep Loss makes you Look Much Older

Lack of sleep causes a person to have sallow skin, fine lines, eye bags, wrinkles and uneven skin color. When we get enough sleep, our body releases more stress hormones and this can break down skin collagen which keeps the skin smooth and elastic. It also causes our body to release little amount of growth hormones. These hormones help our body increase muscle mass, thicken skin and strengthen bones as we age.

Sleep Loss may Increase Risk of Death

This may be caused by accident due to our loss of focus and alertness or by sickness due to our weakened and stressed body. Either way, sleep loss is not good for us. Our body needs proper rest in order to function accordingly and sleep deprivation will hinder us from doing so.

Sleep is important to our bodies. Next time you encounter these effects on your body, you might not be having enough sleep or rest. Take care of yourself and sleep well as much as you could.
